Hey there, I’m Alexander Porrone, a Controls Engineering Manager with a unique blend of expertise in Business Administration and Mechatronic Systems Engineering. My journey at JMP Solutions has been defined by spearheading the growth of the robotics and controls team where I’ve been instrumental in optimizing processes and fostering team growth. From fine-tuning PLCs and robots to driving innovation in high-speed assembly lines, I thrive on tackling complex challenges and ensuring project success through proactive risk management. With a focus on risk mitigation and a passion for driving innovation, I’m committed to taking on our customers most challenging problems and ensuring that our team is a trusted partner for those that we work with. Let’s connect and explore how we can collaborate to make a lasting impact.
Below is a list of my skills and expertise. I have done my best to describe each skill, and how I acquired it. I have also attached hyperlinks where possible to show each skill in practice.
I programmed for a variety of robotic projects including case packers and thread protectors. Specifically I used Robotstudio and teach pendants to program robots. Completed an ABB training course: US426 – IRC5 Accelerated Programming-us.
I programmed for a variety of robotic projects including case packers and thread protectors. I programmed in a object oriented fashion to aid in code readability and robustness. I place emphasis on condition based programming vs sequence based. I’m experienced with Rslogix controllers.
I took an VBA course at the Ivey School of Business on VBA to increase productivity in Microsoft Excel through scripting. Expertise includes: pulling data from servers / web-pages, reformatting data, creating user forms, and I even worked on a team that created a battleship game in excel that you could play over a local network.
I have over five years of experience with Solidworks through designing parts and assemblies for the Western Formula Racing team (see portfolio). I took a course at western on finite element analysis (FEA) in Solidworks. I have also completed all basic training modules for Onshape.
Similar to my Solidworks experience I acquired my printed circuit board skill-set on the Western Formula Racing team. Tasks included board design, debugging, re-design, and soldering. All design was performed in Eagle and debugging was performed with LEDs, Multi-meters, and oscilloscopes, etc. See my project page for more details.
I have experience programming in Arduino, Assembly, FPGA, and Motec. See my project page for specific projects I have worked on in these languages. Programming was done in both real-time and traditional applications.
When I joined Western Formula Racing the drawing sets for the vehicle were produced in Microsoft Visio. My team ported all drawing sets over to Autocad Electrical as well as made additional set in our transition to an Electric Vehicle. Please see my portfolio for examples of my work.
I have played a major role in the design and manufacturing of three wiring harnesses for three separate internal combustion engine wiring harnesses as well as one Electric vehicle harness – including the high voltage harness. Please see my portfolio for the application of this skill.
I took multiple courses at Western University where I programmed in C++, Java, Python, and Arduino. Most work was back end development. I sometimes perform code wars challenges in python to stay fresh.
My father is a General Contractor so I grew up working as a general laborer and eventually operated the following heavy equipment: Backhoe, Excavator, bulldozer, and skid-steer. I also took a summer job at a gravel pit where I operated a rock truck.
I have taken multiple courses at Western University that required the use of Matlab to perform calculations. Examples of this include creating a modular program to determine the failure of a rotating shaft for a mechanical component design course as well as using Simulink to simulate controls circuits. Another example is depicted in my portfolio.
I designed and 3D-Printed various parts while working on the Western Formula Racing team.
